The GN 9120 is a cordless headset featuring a headset and a base unit that connects to the telephone

As for the headset, it’s more like a headset that you’d use with your mobile phone, and weighs in at approximately one ounce.

The base unit itself is sleek looking, and is square with a circular base. It features an inset at the top where you rest the headset when not in use.

This inset also doubles as a charging mechanism, which takes about 1.5 hours to fully charge.

Once you are fully charged, you then have the ability to mute, un-mute, answer a call, make a call, end a call, adjust the volume, and even enter conference mode, all from the headset.

If you’re wondering how far it goes, try 300 feet! I was able to stay on the phone as I walked to the end of my driveway to my mailbox. In addition, it will last for up to 8 hours of talk time before needing an additional charge.

Even nicer, you can literally be up and running in minutes. All you have to do is connect the device between your phone and its handset (receiver) and then lift your telephone handset off the base unit. You should now hear a dial tone through the GN 9210. If you don’t, you can move the telephone terminal switch to any position A-G to get a dial tone. For my test it worked perfectly out of the box, and I was making cordless calls moments after opening it up and hooking it to my existing off-the-shelf corded phone.

If you’re wondering about security, the GN 9120 uses digital spread spectrum, so the signal “hops” 90 times every second.

The coolest feature of the device is its ability to go into conference mode. What that means is that if you have more than one of these headsets, they can be joined to a conversation via the base unit. All you have to do is start the call and then place an additional headset into the base unit for a couple of seconds.

When you remove it a beep will be heard in the master headset (the one that initiated the call) and the person with the master headset has 15 seconds to accept the additional headset. You can have as many as four handsets join the conference using this method.

I can definitely see it being useful in an office environment, though, especially given the proliferation of cubes and lack of conference rooms in most offices these days.

The only thing missing in functionality out of the box is being able to actually hang up the call fully from the handset. So if you’re on a call and you finish, you can shut off the earbud but your phone is still off the hook. GN Netcom solved this problem with an add-on accessory called the GN 1000 RHL “Remote handset lifter.”

This device hooks onto the telephone and literally lifts the receiver off of the phone when you start a conversation and puts it back on when you finish. It’s a very cool concept.

When your phone rings, the GN1000  sends an audible signal right through your GN9330e headset. To answer, simply activate your headset and your phone’s handset will be lifted off-hook automatically, so you can take the call. The handset is also lowered back into place automatically when you end the call.

Unlike all of the other iPhone-compatible Bluetooth wireless headsets we’ve tested, Sennheiser’s approach with the BW900 is intended to be holistic: this is a headset that’s supposed to be used with your mobile phone, and also with a land line.

If the latter part doesn’t make sense at first, here’s the concept: this headset comes with a charging cradle and power supply that you are supposed to hook up to a phone line, then use to answer incoming land calls. It also pairs with your iPhone (or other cell phone) to answer incoming mobile calls.

The BW900 includes a rechargeable battery, but unlike most competitors, the battery’s actually user-removable. Why? For business applications.

Taking advantage of the charging cradle’s potential, Sennheiser includes both a place to dock BW900 and a charging bay for a second battery, touting the device’s ability to maintain a call in progress—say, a protracted conference call or legal negotiation you don’t want to hang up on—while the battery’s being swapped.

Since the BW900’s battery runs for 4-5 hours of talk time depending on your distance from the cradle, you probably won’t need this feature unless you start a call with a partially discharged battery, but it’s an option.

One battery is included, along with a dummy piece of plastic that fills the battery bay hole when not in use.

Sennheiser BW900 Wireless Headset

There are some other major changes to what we’ve come to understand as the “standard Bluetooth headset mold.” Sennheiser, for instance, makes no compromises on size in order to achieve unusually impressive audio quality: the microphone extends via gooseneck-style memory wire all the way down to your mouth, where it’s either exposed or covered by a foam windscreen, and the slightly rubber-covered ear speaker (with three sizes of covers) pivots to match the shape of your ear.

It actually feels good on your ear. You wouldn’t expect that from the size, but it’s not heavy or hard to put on. The ear speaker slides outwards to let you slip BW900 on, then inwards to rest close enough to your ear canal to let you hear your callers without a problem. Sennheiser’s covers don’t use a lot of rubber or special padding, but they don’t have to, as this is more like having a small, good speaker right next to your ear than trying to squeeze something inside.

As surprising as it was to us by comparison with other, more isolating headsets we’ve tested, we liked the sound and the fit.
